Veer Narmad South Gujarat University is a public university located in the city of Surat, Gujarat, India. Formerly known as South Gujarat University, it was renamed Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in 2004 in honor of the famous Gujarati scholar and poet Narmad. Founded in 1965, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, which include non-traditional postgraduate departments such as public administration, home studies, comparative literature, and marine biology.

The University was established under the Law of the University of South Gujarat, 1965. It was opened in 1966 and merged as a University on 23 May 1967, and has been recognized by the University Grants Commission in 1968. VNSGU is the first university in India to offer postgraduate degrees. courses in home studies. In 2004, it was renamed Veer Narmad South Gujarat University after Gujarat poet Veer Narmad whose real name was Narmadshankar Labhshankar Dave.


An urban university located in the town of (Vesu) Surat, the University has a campus spread over 810 hectares. More than 3000 students are studying on this campus. The University has skills in Arts, Commerce, Science, Education, Management Studies, Rural Studies, Engineering and Technology, Medicine, Law and Computer Science, Homeopathy and new Architecture. There are several large and small projects being done in different departments. All departments have computer laboratories and departmental libraries. The central library has more than 1.72 lakh books and has registered for national and international journals in more than 242 countries and 6000 e-journals.

The University Campus has 80 buildings comprising of 6 Boys 'Hostels and 5 Girls' Hostels, with the exception of Gymnastics, Health Center, Indoor Stadium and accommodations for its staff. There is also a child care center. Sports facilities include a gymnasium, a basketball court and a playground with tracks. CB Patel International Cricket Stadium is a university cricket ground. The stadium covers 3.75 lakh sq. ft that meets international stadium standards, and can accommodate 35,000 people. After that the Gujarat Prime Minister and the head of the Gujarat Cricket Association Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the stadium in November 2009. The stadium received a donation from cricket fan Kamlesh Patel. Donated Rs. 5 thousand. In February 2011, then-Gujarat Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Cricket Association Chief opened the stadium and the stadium is awaiting BCCI approval for domestic and international matches.
